FAQ's and Answers Repro vs Orig Orig Booster Plating

On this page you see a few pictures of the inside of boosters that have nice original plating still intact.  There has been much discussion over the years about what boosters looked like when new.  Many “experts” claim that they were never shiny or that they were not zinc dichromate like you see on the faces on this page.

These photos speak for themselves.  As you see they were shiny and the plating is obviously Zinc Dichromate!  The boosters on this page are a good representation of nice plating on Delco Moraine boosters.  They didn’t always look this nice!  Having disassembled easily 14,000 plus boosters in 34 years of doing this I can confidently say that GM was more concerned about production figures and not so much about  having just the right plating hues on a brake booster…..

I have also posted on GM related discussion boards in the past, a letter from the Delco Chassis Division, the division that made these boosters originally, stating that the plating used in 1969 was definitely Zinc Dichromate!!

People routinely say they can remember what these boosters looked like when the cars were new.  I had a brand new 1969 Camaro and I can tell you that my biggest concern was how fast did it go and did those girls notice me go by??  It wasn’t about the plating on a part under the hood!
